Initially a fourtrack project Mawe N. Klave and Silvi Wersi intended to cover The Smiths but ended up recording four originals and a brilliantly intimate lo-fi version of Morrissey´s Everyday Is Like Sunday. After an appearance at Swampland Sessions in Regensburg, Schinderwies released the EP Please Excuse Our Bad English containing the five Cologne-recordings. The songs shine with honest, understated delivery and minimal instrumentation, alternating slow melancholy and childlike playfulness. Sensitive boy-girl harmonies, Mawe´s tender guitar strumming and Silvi´s New Order-basslines are the main focus, accompanied by a groovebox, at times reminiscent of Young Marble Giants.

Hits like How Long Does Long Last? and I Like You reveal the duo´s talent for songwriting, sponteneous, fresh and charming. 2002 saw a couple of short tours and sporadic shows, as well as contributions for several compilations (i.e. Pop You (like a hurricane) – series by Mawe´s fanzine Pitti Platsch 3000). Despite the distance between their hometowns (Cologne – Nuremburg), Silvi and Mawe managed to record a number of new songs to complete their full-length debut Gleichstrom/Wechselstrom (German for AC/DC), released in cooperation with keplar (white vinyl-LP: Schinderwies, CD: keplar). Side A contains the five numbers from the EP, remastered by Hans Christian Fuss (Hidalgo), side B nine new recordings, for which Mikrofisch extended their use of instruments: Vermona and Hohner organs, glockenspiel, melodica and Fruity Loops.

Mary (an instrumental for Stereolab singer Mary Hansen who died in December 2002), November, Funky Kiosk and Streets show a growing complexity and thoughtfulness without losing the old charme. Other pieces are short instrumental sketches, examples for Mikrofisch´s playful sound research. Another highlight is the album´s second cover: Little Red Go-Kart by Nuremburg-based 80´s Punk-Wave heroes Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan. Mikrofisch´s version made it to number 1 in the Sapporro college charts! Mikrofisch is not about riding any slowcore or tendercore trains - it´s about closeness. Be there be square!
